CHARACTER NAME; Luke fon Fabre
AGE; 19
CANON; Tales of the Abyss
CANON POINT; after releasing Lorelei, before reuniting with the party
PARTNER; coronamon
APPEARANCE; Like all members of the Kimlascan royal family, Luke has vibrant red hair and emerald green eyes. Although his hair has gone through several style changes over the years, it is currently somewhat darker in color, and falls to the small of his back. The top layer of his hair is much shorter, and shaggy; so much so that it falls in his face occasionally, concealing his features. His musculature is well defined due to many years of sword training as well as several years of frequently engaging in combat. He wears a long, tailed white coat with navy blue trim, as well as a navy blue scarf and black trousers. He also carries a large sword with him, known as the Key of Lorelei, strapped to his lower back; he wields it left-handed.
PERSONALITY; At the start of his journey, Luke could only be described as a spoiled brat. Years of being confined to his manor home left him ignorant to the world at large, and being coddled by his mother and servants throughout that time left him selfish and inconsiderate. As a result he tended to be rude, impulsive, and essentially difficult to be around.
Although Luke’s behavior at this time could certainly be seen as childish, he was quick to anger when anyone treated him like a child. In fact, he had a short temper and was quick to anger towards other people in general. And when doing or saying something inappropriate he tended to get defensive in response rather than apologize, rarely ever able to admit that he was wrong. As a result, Luke had few true friends; there was only Guy, his long-time servant and friend, and a soldier named Van Grants. Van acted as Luke’s teacher and seemingly was the only one who, by Luke’s estimation, treated him with any respect or as his own autonomous person. In turn Luke held Van in highest regard, unquestionably praising his every action while remaining endlessly critical and rude toward everyone else.
Still, even at this early stage Luke was not without his positive qualities; they are just hidden very, very deeply beneath his bad attitude. For example, Luke always held all life in very high regard. After first setting out on his journey Luke was hesitant to kill even monsters, and at first refuses to fight human soldiers, although he ultimately realized that it is a necessity. Luke would also occasionally look out for someone weaker than himself, such as the cheagles, although even this was motivated by somewhat selfish reason.
But his unconditional trust in Van, coupled with Luke’s ignorance and selfishness, lead him to make a terrible mistake. Luke was easily manipulated by Van into destroying a town called Akzeriuth, costing thousands of people their lives. At first Luke was still unwilling to admit to his own blame in the tragedy, but after being abandoned by all of his travelling companions—including even Guy—Luke realized that he had been behaving selfishly and immaturely all along, and didn’t really know how to think for himself. He made a commitment at that moment to change for the better, and to do everything he could to make up for the destruction he caused.
Around the same time Luke discovers that he is actually a replica of the original Luke fon Fabre. As a result he develops somewhat of an inferiority complex—convinced he is less important than the original, Asch—and a desperate desire to find meaning in his own existence.
Despite Luke’s desire for and commitment to change, however, the path towards redemption doesn’t always come easily to him. He still completely lacks knowledge of the world around him, so he is rarely able to think or act for himself without the help of others. And Luke becomes almost manically obsessed with helping other people, still primarily motivated by his desire to assuage his own guilt rather than a genuine desire to do good. If he doesn’t dedicated himself entirely to helping others, after all, how will he ever make up for or be forgiven for his past mistakes? His teammates often have to remind him to calm down when situations get bad, because panicking will not save anyone.
From this point forward Luke shows a willingness to take huge risks to help other people, even to the point of potentially sacrificing himself; he feels that if he dies to save others his life will have had purpose. He is often criticized for this; by touting around his guilt and throwing his life away he is not truly compensating for his past mistakes.
Over time, he grows into a much more caring, thoughtful individual. Once brash and unaware of the feelings of others, Luke becomes one of the party members most likely to notice when someone is upset and needs cheering up. He slowly adopts a more diplomatic and strategic method to solving problems, rather than rushing into potentially lethal battles unnecessarily. He also ultimately comes to realize that he is not just a replacement for Asch—even though he still considers himself the inferior of the two—but his own unique person; what this means for him, however, as a replica who was never truly meant to exist, is still unclear to Luke.
Eventually faced with no other option, Luke decides to sacrifice himself in order to save the world. He admits to being afraid to do so, even though he had previously stated he wouldn’t hesitate to die if it could correct his past mistakes. Despite his fear, he is more than willing to follow through, and even believes it is what he wants. In the final moments, though, he realizes what he really wants is to live—not for anyone else, or so that his life will have meaning, but for the sake of living. Finally, Luke has fully evolved from a selfish and naïve child who was completely dependent on the guidance and approval of others to a kind and confident, independent individual.
HISTORY; wiki page
slight addendum to Luke’s history: Luke’s ending is essentially open-ended, as the game intentionally leaves an air of mystery surrounding it. My personal (fairly standard) interpretation is that the Luke seen in the ending is replica Luke’s consciousness in Asch’s body, so that is what I am going with. Shouldn’t have too much effect on things one way or the other, unless Luke eventually meets a castmate.
SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON;
3.) If you were given the option to stay in the Digital World or return to home, which would you choose? Why?
Well, I do have a promise to keep. So I really need to be getting home.
But if this world really does need me, then I can’t just abandon it. I hate to keep my friends waiting, but they’ll understand. I want to do everything I can here. Then I’ll worry about getting home.
…Don’t worry, Tear. I’ll definitely be back.
5.) You have one choice. That choice will result in either the end of the world or it will save it. Which way would you go?
I would save it, of course!
It’s never really that simple though, is it? After all, there are…some people who believe the only way to save the world is to destroy it. It’s not always such a clear choice. That’s why you always just have to do the best that you can to do what you think is right!
1.) If you could make any reality at all, what would you make?
I would like to make a world where everyone is free to live the life they want to live.
Heh. And where no one has to be poor. And war never happens.
I like to think I made great strides towards that already. I guess I’ll have to wait and see.
THIRD PERSON;
“Digivice, huh?” Luke turned the small contraption about in his hands, looking it over carefully. Not that his examination did him much good; Guy was always the one who had been good with fontech, and for his part Luke had been next to useless at it. Besides, however this thing worked it was considerably more advanced than any of the fontech he’d ever seen, even the mysterious devices left behind by the Dawn Age in Yulia City.
There was sure to be someone here who could help him figure it out. But that line of thought of course just led to the next question. Not so much why he was here, but how he was here. He had his own hunch about it, at least, but he couldn’t help but wish Jade was here to bounce his thoughts off of.
But he was at it again, wasn’t he? Relying on everyone else to solve his problems, just when he thought he’d gotten past that. He shook his head; how disappointed would they be if they could all see him now? Besides, they undoubtedly had their own challenges to deal with back in Auldrant know. He couldn’t deny wanting them all here with him, but he wouldn’t wish them here for anything. He was on his own. Well, no, that wasn’t right; he wasn’t alone here, just without the friends and allies he was used to.
According to culumon (and, fine, he was thinking of his friends back home again, but how could anyone see that bouncy little creature and not think of mieu?) his help was needed here. If that was the case, then he was more than willing to do everything he could. He wasn’t sure how much help he could be, seeing as this place was completely foreign to him. But he could learn.
That began with mastering his new digivice, Luke supposed, coming full circle. He glanced at his new ‘partner’ walking along beside him (not alone, he reminded himself). Maybe the digimon would be able to help him figure it out; they were supposed to be working together now, after all. That was yet another odd thing to add to the list, of course: all of these monsters working together with humans.
“Ugh, it’s too much to take in all at once.” He suddenly said aloud, to no one in particular. He wasn’t doing anyone any good trying to process it all at once. He was confused, he was tired, and first things first he had some things to figure out for himself. Once he’d done that, and gotten some rest, he’d see what he could do to help out around here.
Beside him his partner was glancing up at Luke worriedly, no surprise considering his outburst. Luke smiled back, and that seemed to be reassurance enough. “Let’s go home for now, then?” Luke asked his newest friend. The digimon nodded happily in response.
Luke checked his newly assigned room number once more, and was off to the living quarters.
